have you ever heard of "social jetlag"? - it's a very good scientific explantation for "night owl-ism". It is a medical condition, although it is very hard to diagnose as it is often confused with insomnia. It's also called "dealyed sleep phase disorder". Basically a person's "sleepy chemicals" release and activate later in the day than the average person's does, which explains why some of us function better at night than most folks who function better during the daytime.
