Angelina

helenangel noticed I signed my letter to B with "Angelina" and she asked me about it. Here's the deal. Read this with the voice of Sophia Petrillo in your mind.

Picture it....Duncan...1999. A young woman has just undergone some difficult transformations and decides she wants to redefine herself. At the same time, she's becoming increasingly more active online as she hunts for fellow Shriekback fans in the hopes of bringing all fans together under a single banner of solidarity. When she first started making contact with folks, she decided to begin the process of changing her identity from "Tracy" to "Angelina," her middle name. It was her hope to eventually get everyone to call her by her middle name as a sign that she was no longer the girl she'd been prior to 1998.

The year 2000 hits and she reaches out to an individual running a website that links to Phil's Shriekback Index Pages and she signs her note "Angelina." She gets a letter back from Barry Andrews, who comes to know her primarily as "Angelina" then, later, as "Tracy Angelina" when it's obvious that the young woman's attempt to shed "Tracy" was all in vain.

So....that's why I signed the letter "Angelina."

I hear that. I tried to switch to my middle name, too, with the same ultimate results (not happening). People are soooo resistant if you try to change stuff! Jeepers!

That's because people should not change things.

For instance, had tin-tin introduced herself to me as Angelina, I wouldn't call her Tracy. Not that I call her Tracy anyway... since her proper name is tin-tin, or "Barry Fodder"

Heh. Yeah, there are folks who just call me Tin, which is fine 'cos that's my Craft name. Barry Fodder is NOT okay. You're scaring me.

Barry Fodder is actually the shortened "cute" name for the much detailed description of him ripping the flesh from you.

I actually successfully switched my name aside from close family members that I would prefer didn't call me.

Yeah, I now have four names: my original nickname, which I ditched for my full real name (used at work), but prefer to be called Tallis, and am known online as Falkenna. There are people who *only* know me by each one of those names! My friends are *starting* to get Tallis (after three years), some of my family are remembering to use my full name most of the time.

Tain't an easy thing.
