The Mother Unit sent me the link to this picture. He's the one draped over the bass, which he can still play like a madman even in his 80s.

Grandpa Irving

**For Old time's sake**

"Who is that old fool?"..."He's playing a whatchamacallit".

I *knew* you couldn't resist it. I'm thinking of forwarding this to Tim with the subject line "The Old Fool."

He was so embarrassed that day....::snicker::

What can I say? I'm weak when it comes to taking the easy smarty pants joke.

How did you like the way I embellished it and added Doc into it? I thought it was kind of a clever twist.

G'pa is tres cool. He gave me his wooden pot pipe, the official Manheim family heirloom, or so I like to think of it.

Very cool - I wish I had a good photo (any photo) of my biological Granpa.

I love his pose in that shot - what is it about bassists that they always seem to have an 'overabundance of personality'? (And I mean that in a complimentory way, of course.)

Oh he's a real card, G'pa. London-born Jewish musician/Vaudevillian. Played with Louis Armstrong and Benny Goodman. Complete goofball. I just wish I could have known him better when he was in his prime.

Why don't you have any photos of your biological grandfather, if you don't mind my asking?

Don't know how good an answer I have for ye. He passed along (I think I like that euphemism) when I was a very little kid. And my family is weird with photos - not a lot are taken and the ones that are are sort of - hoarded(?). With the digital age, it is a bit easier, but I will have to start a major search to see if one exists somewhere near a scanner.... Just something I had never really thought of before.

He is cool. I can't remember how old he'll be later on this month, but I know he's in his 80s now, and still just cool as can be.

I think that is a very cool ass pic. It's awsome to see your ancestors in such beautiful, and natural poses and settings. And you have reminded me that I need to get a copy of the glamor shot my grandmother did when she was in her late teens. She was a smoking hotty!

Oh he's still handsome, even in his 80s. A bit frail now, but handsome. If I can find a picture of him from when I visited in 2004, I'll post it.

Sweet, I would never have known When in that picture if it wasn't for the caption. That picture is virtually eternal. He looks... incredible.

He's a wonderful man, my g'pa. Seeing this pic made me realise how much I miss him. I wish I could drive down to FLA and say howdy.

I am reasonably certain that it has to do with the angle of his head. He's hot.

What a cool cat! (checks) Hey, it IS a Minton! Minton took such awesome photographs of that entire scene and of all those folks who still live on in their music: Louis, Billy, Dizzy, Benny, and your Gramps.

(The fact that the link is from my local paper threw me for sec.I guess I need my chai, eh?)

I didn't know that Minton did that. See? You learn something new every day.
