Heather is back from vacation. She seems like an overall cool chica. She even has tattoos, so I'm greatly relieved that I'm not the only inked soul here at the Waystation.

So, a few minutes ago, I went to Brian's office and asked him if he'd take a call for Doug, whom I could not find. When I turned to go back to my desk, Heather said, "You are so nice!"

Taken aback, I said, "Me?"

"Yes! I called in a couple of times last week and you answered the phone. I asked Doug and Brian if you were just that nice and polite on the phone and they said you were like this all the time. That's so cool!"

I don't see myself as "nice." just business-minded. I was taken aback like whoa by her comments. I told her that she seemed awfully nice to me, so I didn't see how we were that different at all. She said she wasn't in too much of a habit of saying "please" and "thank you," that maybe it was just because she was from a younger generation.

So I'm an ancient, polite, nice person who is obviously easy to get along with. Have I lost my edge? Have I become a Jedi in the short period of time I was unemployed and genuinely happy? Am I only fit to make cuckoo clocks instead of prepping myself for my own personal renaissance? Ho hum.

Um.

You are nice.

Not suffering fools gladly does not make one mean or un-nice.

Sorry.

But you are.

Deal with it.

:)

What she is observing is appropriateness and professionalism. And there's nothing wrong with the burning rage powering down for a little while here and there. You are a nice person, and so am I (we don't shove old ladies into traffic, etc), but I would've been confused and offended by that had it been said to me. Nowadays, though, I don't so much mind being called "nice" but if a coworker called me "sweet," it would probably get ugly. Polite is good. It is neither Jedi nor Sith. Polite is light and dark.

It never would have occured to me that common courtesy is OPTIONAL in a business setting. The fact that professional behavior is now perceived as being unusual and "nice" explains a hell of a lot about the demise of good service in modern society.

Just remember that old quote "The Devil's greatest trick was to convince the world he didnt exist". Not that i think you're the Devil, but you get what i mean.

And, for the record, i think you're nice. You kick ass, and you dont take shit from anybody, but you are also nice.

What they said, but also don't forget the Anglophilia -- very fond of the old Please and Thank you, the Brits. (It doesn't make *them* nice!)

If I could reach through this computer, I would give you a nice, loving, gentle throttling....

I know you are loathe to admit it, but you are actually likeable!

And you understand the concept of being professional, which is becoming a lost art in this country.

You were given a compliment - accept it, dammit....

grumble grumble
