I think that was pretty obvious by his landing in the desert. He'd just got there from another time, and had to check the date -- which he had planned because of Sayeed burying his wife. I think Ben had her killed to get Sayeed on his side.
I've watched the episode 3 times now, and the suggestions that Ben and Widmore are playing Risk/D&D are so obvious that they may be deliberate red herrings. But which are Player Characters and which are NPCs?????
