Tortoises on Parade
Jun. 19th, 2003 08:32 amEvery year it's the same thing. The tortoises, or box turtles, or whatever the hell they are begin to migrate and invariably end up sacheting across the roads.
Now, I'm the person who has to stop and pick up earthworms on the pavement and move them back to soft ground before the sun cooks them. So, each year, I risk life and limb by playing in traffic to rescue these tortoises. It's hard since people in this area drive like crackheads with insomnia and some of them even try to hit the poor creatures. "thar's wun, Cleavis. It's a big 'un! 'At'll be 10 pernts if you smoosh it. YEEE HAAAAWWW!"
Anyway, this morning, I had to stop in the entrance to work and move a tortoise. Usually, they will squoonch into their shells, but this one just sorta looked at me as if to say "Unhand me, you noxious fool!" and then he snapped at me, like he could even bloody reach me. Heh!
Still though, I guess it's a fact of nature that the ones who try to help most usually do so thanklessly and at risk of their own necks, regardless of species or locale. Kind of depressing, but not so much that I won't be out playing in traffic later on today if the need arises.
