tinhuvielDuring my time on Earth, visiting various locales and encountering different people and cultures, I have found a strange connection between mainstream religions, ignorance, and an obsession with sports. The more entrenched in mainstream religion (like fundamentalism) an area is, the less that area focuses on real education and the more the people glorify sports (like local football in South Carolina). I've seen this connection time and time again, but the reason for it eludes me. I've yet to hear the lost Sermon on the Mount where Jesus gives Friday night's high school football scores with a fervour like he was channeling dear ole dad himself.

He asked me if I was going to church and I told him that we'd gone over that, and he knew I wasn't. He got the saddest tone in his voice and told me that I needed to go so I could get closer to God. To which I replied, "God and I have a fantastic relationship...and that's what it's about. Relationship." He said nothing for a full minute, at least. Then he changed the subject.

God doesn't care what I have for dinner (as long as it's not my ten year old son I've decided to roast over the grill...that, I believe, He would take offense to).
And God doesn't care who wins the flippin' football game.

Date: 2011-08-04 02:20 am (UTC)I've always found it weird how the size of the stage determines how finely tuned are tribal instinct is. In your little town, it's this Baptist church against that one. But on a bigger stage, it's protestant versus Catholic. And later, Christian vs. Muslim. Anyway...
A certain kind of person has a stronger sense of us than another kind. Conservatives are the ones we always call xenophobes. Racist, selfish, whatever. Anyone not like them is wrong. Liberals are generally more tolerant and accepting of others.
