Miss Mattie
Dec. 5th, 2003 01:12 pmAbout 15 years ago, there was this wonder matronly lady who worked in the Pit alongside me, when I was still out in the warehouse and was lead person in the video department. Her name was Mattie, but everyone called her Miss Mattie, and we all loved her dearly. For about a year I worked with Miss Mattie and grew extremely close to her.
She was a very religious woman. It was obvious that she was a true Christian, truly practicing her faith in every aspect of her life. She didn't just go to church; rather, church went with here wherever she went. I loved her so much!
In 1989, Miss Mattie's back went out on her and she had to leave the Pit. She gave us all her phone number and divulged that we could see her every Sunday morning on WSPA, as she sang in a morning Gospel show. I stayed in touch with her for some time after that and actually saw her show a couple of times. She was an incredible singer!
As the years wore on, Miss Mattie and I lost touch and, even though I would think about her occasionally, I figured I'd never see her again.
Well, last Sunday morning, as I was waiting for Carol Ann to come in so I could end my shift at Telehell, I was tuning in the TV and, lo and behold! there was Miss Mattie! Yeah, she is still singing on WSPA and she doesn't look a bit different. I've had Miss Mattie on my mind all week as a result.
Then, just 30 minutes ago, I was at the post office about to walk in when who should come out of the building but Miss Mattie! We had a lovely reunion and it was heartening that she remembered me! She told me that she was still having problems with her back and had to have her knees replaced, but she was holding on as best she could. As we parted ways, she asked that I pray for her. Of course I will!
