More on Egypt. Wheeee!

We skipped the tour the next day and took a horse cart for an hour's ride. It was enjoyable un til the end. We had made a price of 20 Egyptian pounds, about $3.50 each. Paying off at the end, the driver then says $20.00 each--he did not get it!

We left Aswan in the afternoon and docked at Kom Ombo. The temple was Roman, with some well-preserved hieroglyphics. There were about 40 broken steep steps from the dock to the road which almost did me in! I really felt my age and then there were 20 mose to the temple. Walking back down, it was after dark and tricky! And of course the way was lined with vendors.

Terry and I bought Jalabeas, caftans of a sort, some very fancy with intricate braiding and beads and sequins to wear to the Egyptian dinner and party with fun and games.

Back on the river on Sunday. There seem to be hundreds of river boats, we were told 330, carrying anywhere from 100 to 200 passengers each. After lunch we "docked" for the tour to Karnak Temple. The boats are stacked 6-8 deep here at the docks, and it is necessary to walk through other boats to get shore. If you are one of the inner boats, it is very claustrophobic. Today we were on the outside and when I could finally see the dock, I decided to skip the tour--it looked like 100 steep steps, broken of course, from the dock to the buses. Tain't worth it! I know my limitations, and I won't take chances on falling and dislocating one of my artificial hips!

There are so many interesting things here--the culture, the history, the antiquities, ancient structures, but the crowds, pollution in the cities, garbage in the river and the streets bother me a great deal. I have to say that my feelings on Egypt are very mixed. I really do not mind missing some of the attracti9ons because of my physical problems. Oh, yes, I can walk on the flat as well as anyone, although not as fast as some. But climbiong broken stairs or steep inclines over rocks and no handrail just is not for me anymore!

A live pianist plays in the lounge each night, and he is pretty bad! knows no American music at all, plus the piano is out of tune.
