I've gotten some doozies since I've been working with the band, but I have to say the two letters I've received since yesterday have got to be right up there with the most unusual. Both were addressed to Barry's site.

Letter #1:
It all seems so hazy now but i have been trying to contact barry for a while but have had no reply from my phonecalls or from the dead birds that i have pushed through his letter box. I wondered if he would mind if i took a photo of him with some giant snails on his head to use as a link button on my site to his. Alas I am hoping that he would like to keep the snails afterwards and is welcome to them as a belated Xmas present as all my pets die horrible deaths. Many thanks.

He can have the photos afterwards............................................

Letter #2:
I just made my boyfriend buy me "Oil and Gold" and "Big Night Music" for my birthday, the latter being out of print and $45 on Amazon.com from some used record store in God-knows-where. Anyway, listening to the albums again for the first time in a few years, with new ears, one might say, and poking around online, led me to a question: Are any members of Shriekback gay? My beloved editorial board has a fairly strict policy, so if there are any gay members, I can review the new mini-album, which would be a wonderful sychronicity of my tastes and my job.

Letter #2 is relatively OK except you just don't go about asking what folks' sexual orientation is...at least I don't....but letter #1 is superfreaky.

Sounds like a prank by someone with a sense of humor a bit more twisted than mine (only a bit more twisted) Luved the bit about the dead birds in the letterbox. What a visual!

I can easily imagine letter 1 actually being from someone he knows -- or possibly someone just deliberately aping his sense of humour. I'd love to see said site!

Asking about sexual orientation becomes quite normal, in a milieu where there's lots of "out" gay people, and clearly the writer is in such an environment if he works for a gay mag. It's not the first question you'd normally ask in Brighton, or that you'd ask baldly of a total stranger, but it's also quite a possible thing to do with just a modicum of tact. When the chief executive of the city council is openly gay, it ceases to be a scary question.

If any members of SB were that openly gay, they would probably welcome his enquiry and ensuing review. And if not, then he just gets a negative answer (even if they are gay but quiet), and nobody suffers.
