In a desperate attempt to break my left leg off at the knee, I jumped on the stair master at the gym for about 5 minutes last night. Today, I am limping about the office like Festus from "Gunsmoke."

Why am I so stupid sometimes? My knee is calling me all sorts of foul names, I just know it. And I deserve every one of them.

aaahhhh, so sorry

If the gym has a pool, use it instead. Less impact on tender joints, which lets you strengthen them and the legs a bit while getting the exercise. If there's a lap pool, use it to walk as fast as you can back and forth. You'd be amazed what that alone can do for tone and conditioning without the damage to the knee.

Alas, there is no pool in our gym here at work. Good idea, though!

Then look for elipticals. Things that are lower impact.

THEN, there are some exercise you can do at home to strengthen your knees. Start with lunges, not as a stretch though, get some music with a beat you can keep up with, do ten lungest forward on the right, then on the left leg, Then do ten lungest only to the side, 45 degree angle from front, but keep your foot facing the direction you lunge in (better for your knee, don't wrench it by having your foot face the front when you are putting your weight to the side. Bad.), switch sides. Do as deep as your knee will let you. Knee bends will also help strengthen the knees as well as the thighs. Again, as deep as the knee lets you do, ten reps at a time. When they get strong enough, add hopping.

All that is to help get the balancing muscles around the knee to get stronger. This helps take impact off the knee and helps the knee gain flexibility all at the same time.

Been there, done all of it. It's arthritis in the knee from surgery, so it's just a thing I have to deal with on occasion. Thanks for the advice, though! Much appreciated.
