It never fails.....

The season comes 'round and I invariably end up hearing it. And it always brings tears to my eyes to think of all the things we've (my generation) lost when there was so much potential there.

Now we have Nick and Jessica breathing "It's Cold Outside" so that they can show that their lack of talent knows no bounds.

I still have my 45 of this song in the original picture sleeve. I was particularly good at singing the Boy George parts. I teared up then too, with hope for the future. It all seemed so right and so bright. Everyone pulled together to help....and it didn't end with Christmas. Live Aid came the following Summer and took an entire generation's breath away with hope and togetherness.

Now I just tear up from the weight of cynicism that plagues me during this time of year.

Where's Saint Bob?
Where's Midge?
Where's Heaven 17 and Spandau Ballet?
I want to know.
Where is my youth and my hope?
What happened to Christmas? Do they know it's Christmastime at all?

It's Christmastime
There's no need to be afraid
At Christmastime, we let in light and we banish shade
And in our world of plenty we can spread a smile of joy
Throw your arms around the world at Christmastime

But say a prayer

Pray for the other ones
At Christmastime it's hard, but when you're having fun
There's a world outside your window
And it's a world of dread and fear
Where the only water flowing is the bitter sting of tears
And the Christmas bells that ring there are the clanging
chimes of doom
Well tonight thank God it's them instead of you

And there won't be snow in Africa this Christmastime
The greatest gift they'll get this year is life
(Oooh) Where nothing ever grows
No rain nor rivers flow
Do they know it's Christmastime at all?

(Here's to you) raise a glass for everyone
(Here's to them) underneath that burning sun
Do they know it's Christmastime at all?

Feed the world
Feed the world

Feed the world

Let them know it's Christmastime again

Feed the world
Let them know it's Christmastime again

I guess I must be an even bigger cynic than you---even as a child I always thought that was such a fake gimmick-y gesture...I really can't recall that I *ever* expected much from the world as a whole...Maybe that has something to do with my having had to make do on a bowl of ramen a day for much of my childhood at the time when everyone was making such a fuss about kids on the other side of the world being in what didn't seem that much worse straits. Maybe in some ways they were worse off, but at least they were in a place where it was normal...

Sorry, I'm confused now. You mean, they released the first one in the US all those years ago? But they didn't release the new one??? How utterly bizarre!!! Do you think there was political pressure, lest Americans start thinking there was something wrong with war, or that they ought to help other countries???? How scarey!

St Bob and Midge are right there, still on the case. And Bono sang the same line. Added are Chris from Coldplay, Dido, and Justin from the Darkness (and a bunch of crappy people).
