Barry Andrews has made a new blog post to the Shriekback Tumblr. If you like the bit I'm posting here, just click the picture to be taken to the full post. It's pretty damned fascinating, and I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

I find it interesting that these two art moments documenting a terrible existential awakening both happen at the seaside and that it was the Victorians who invented the old school English seaside holiday (with all it’s hearty stoicism insisting on fun in the face of the elements ('brrr -nice out of the wind though'). This, alongside grim philosophical introspection. How does that work? What I unfailingly get from my own marine meditations is a sense of perspective ('too much fucking perspective' as the Spinal Tap boys say). The primal, merciless sea right up against humanity at it’s most lovable, ridiculous and vulnerable (those goosepimpled bodies in summer; off-season, the garish lights and fragile, tinny music from the pier timorously jutting out into the sombre ocean). Who are we kidding that we’re important or serious?

Barry has also uploaded a version of the song on his Soundcloud account. Click the cormorant to access the song, and click Barry if you want to go to his Soundcloud bungalow.

Low on both animal food and people food, Aunt Tudi headed out around 2:30 to procure both. We first went to Target to stock up on non-perishables, then moseyed over to Pet-Smart next door. After picking up two honkin' bags of Cat Chow and one honkin' bag of Kibbles'n'Bits, we made our way to the check out, where I heard my name called out. Turning, I saw an attractive lady with an equally attractive daughter, and a puppy that was cute as hell. She said, "Hi Tracy, do you know me?" Now, I'm awful at attaching names to faces to names, and I began to feel that panic of hurting someone's feelings and embarrassing myself. Instead of trying to guess, I decided just to bite the bullet and say, "Uhm...no?"

"[livejournal.com profile] anita1967!"

Relieved because, if I've ever seen [livejournal.com profile] anita1967 in a picture, I couldn't remember. I remember seeing her son and his band in pictures on her journal, but not her. So I was relieved, because I hadn't forgotten someone and was about to insult them or make myself look like a moron. We chit-chatted for a few minutes. I didn't even get to introduce Aunt Tudi 'cos [livejournal.com profile] anita1967 already knew her through LJ. She introduced me to her daughter and her new puppy Snoopy, and we had an all-round pleasant visit. It was so cool! I told her this was my first ever LJ encounter (spontaneous, that is). The only thing I regret is that I didn't feel like doing up at all before we left for town, so I looked like a total bag lady when I met [livejournal.com profile] anita1967. She must think I'm some sort of hobo who accesses the Internet at cafes and libraries as I hop trains across country.

We went to the post office where, there waiting for me, was a package from England. It was the Cormorant Egg from Malicious Damage. How groovy is that? It's a lovely little egg full of wonderful music, and the certificate just blows me away.

I'm gonna have to send B and Colesy and email to thank them for a most wonderful and unique thing to add to my Shriekback collection. But that can wait 'til tomorrow. I'm pooped and want to curl up under some blankets before I freeze to death. And I promised Aunt Tudi a back rub.
