I went to the orthopaedist today, the same one I went to over a year ago who wouldn't do anything for my knees. He looked at my ankle and echoed what the E/R docs said in that this was one of the worst sprains he'd seen. He put me in a boot and prescribed me some Ultram, which is like sugar pills for me, and said he wanted to see me in six weeks. I'll go back for the follow-up because I'm sure it's required to get my bills covered by BP, but then I'm never going back to that buttmunch again. I said as much when I first saw him for my knees and I would never have gone back to him if I hadn't been pressed into seeing him. They wouldn't let me see any of the other docs in that group because my chart was already set up with him. Once my Medicare goes into effect in October, I'm finding myself a decent orthopaedic doctor and telling this to eat dirt.

And this boot they put me in? I remember Michael Jackson wearing a pair in one of his epic 80s videos. Here's hoping this boot gives me MJ's mad dancing skills yo.

Oh, and here's a picture of those bruises. Dr. Asshat said the bruises would probably continue to extend out to the toes and the top of my foot. Good times! >:[

OH Sweetie - please research some docs in your area. This doc is a nut.

Anyone that takes any drugs for a month knows ultram is useless - stomach upsets at best. Looks like (I'm not there) you could use a *waterpill* to ease a bit of the swelling???

Hang in there. I know you are in pain.

I keep being told to elevate my leg to keep the swelling down like I'm not doing that already. Could it have occurred to them that the swelling is so bad that this is the best I can do? Sometimes I hate doctors...and this doctor is on my primary care shitlist from hell, trust me.

I know this is a long shot - can you call the lawyer & see if you can be seen by another doctor & payment put off till October?

I remember when David was paid - he lost all those doctors & they wouldn't see him again. Bast....ds

Well, it's only one more visit, then the rest will be like punitive stuff. I need a long-term orthopaedic doc for my knees, someone who can help me with my pain and give me some decent suggestions on how to care for my knees until I'm eligible for my knee replacements (once I turn freakin' 50).

Did you mention to him that Ultram doesn't work for you? Most are willing to work with you.
I realise he's a douche bag, but he might have been wiling to prescribe something otherwise.

Yeah, I told him that. He informed me that was all he would prescribe for something "minor" like this. Asshat...

Yikes, that's quite a bruise. Your description of it happening sounded pretty bad, but that's ... yeah, yikes.

If the boot does, in fact, give you Jackson-like dancing skills, you have to post a video. If you were on better pain meds, I'd suggest a video of you giving it a shot either way. ;)

If I were on decent pain meds, I'd dance like Michael Jackson out of sheer joy from not hurting. ha ha!

By the way you described the pain I wouldn't be surprised if you had damaged the fascia on the bottom of your foot as well as your ankle ligaments. I hope Dr. Buttmunch eventually recommends some physical therapy of some sort for you, and thank goodness that didn't need surgery.

One of my most unpleasant experiences with a doctor was when I sprained my ankle. She said there was nothing she could do and wouldn't even prescribe pain medication because I needed the feedback from my body to tell me what not to do!

Sprains are the worst! If I had broken the bone, she at least would have set it. The healing time from breaks is less than from sprains, according to the bitch I had to go see.

That's what the asshat said. I would have kicked him if I hadn't had a sprained ankle.

Clarifying...

What that actually x-rayed?

My "sprain" in 1994 looked just like that (and yes, the bruises traveled all over my foot), and ultimately turned out to be a break that was never properly treated and still causes me no end of pain and annoyance.

They x-rayed every angle of my ankle and my foot. If it's not feeling much better by next week, I'm making an appointment with a different orthopaedic doctor. I'm getting away from Dr. Asshat.

Okay, good, good.

You are probably all right (relatively speaking), but if you SUPER distrust this guy, get a second opinion.

To clarify on my end:
Mine was never x-rayed at the time of the injury because my asshat was sure it was just a severe sprain. I guess he specialized in psychic diagnoses.

My ankle was subsequently accidentally included in the frame for another x-ray I got years later and THAT asshat asked me why I never got it treated.

If I'm not mistaken, that exchange went a little something like this:

New Asshat: "Your knee is fine, I don't see any permanent damage, but why didn't you get your ankle properly set? It's probably contributing to the issue with the knee. This is why it's so important to take these things seriously, because you might think 'If it's not hurting it's no big deal' but years later you blah blah blah blah blah blah"

Me: "I'm sorry, but WTF are you talking about?"

New Asshat: "Your broken ankle."

Me: O.o "I have a broken ankle?"

Every day, in every way, I hate doctors more.
